The Myth of Fashion

Paintings, drawings and objects

At Galerija Bačva, the Mimara Museum and the Croatian Association of Visual Artists presented some forty paintings, drawings and objects made by Dimitrije Popović over the past four years.

About the exhibition

In the cycle The Myth of Fashion Dimitrije Popović approaches the female fashion body as a fluid, metamorphic phenomenon. Combining techniques from acrylic to drawing, he builds the body like a collage in which the inside breaks through to the surface – bones pierce the skin, organs become visible, and faces, eyes and feet take on a surrealist emphasis.

In these works the body appears as a performance, a hybrid of the living and the inanimate. The title draws on Barthes' notion of myth as a semiological system, and the artist links the cycle to his earlier series Freudisms and to the eroticised staging of haute couture shows.

The catalogue foreword was written by Petra Krpan. Two performances inspired by the cycle were staged at the opening: Fashion Cage by Branka Vučetić Atletić and I Am Who I Am by Josip Joško Tešija.
